Tips on Preventing Clogged Drains

Emergencies are an unfortunate part of life and often strike when least expected. Clogged drains are something probably everyone has experienced at one point or another but luckily there are tips to prevent this nuisance.
Cleaning your drains will create fewer plumbing problems, in the long run, saving you time and money. Your plumbing system is an important part of your day-to-day life, so keeping your plumbing pipes and drains clean is crucial.
Watch Your Sink
Watching what you put down your sink’s drain is the most obvious solution, but it’s still something to be cautious of. Unwanted items can clog and cause serious damage to your drains, especially a kitchen sink disposal. Here are a few items to be cautionary of:
  • Grease: Keep leftover grease in a container and make sure it doesn’t go down any drains. Let the grease cool and then take it to the trash.
  • Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds often build up and absorb the water, creating a clog.
  • Leftover Food: Even if you have a disposal, large pieces of food like vegetables, raw eggshells, and fruit will cause large clogs that might need assistance from a drain and sewage service.
  • Hair: When showering, watching for long pieces of hair that may go down the drain. Hair builds up and will cause flooding over time if not attended to. Consider purchasing a drain catcher in your showers and sinks, this will prevent hair and other items from building up.
Cleaning Tips:
  • Vinegar & Hot Water: Rinse your drains with vinegar and hot water to clear and clean out the pipes.
  • Drain Catchers: In your showers and sinks make sure to purchase a drain catcher. This will ensure that even the items you miss won’t end up down the drain.
  • Plumbing Snake: A plumbing snake can help get hair and other items that are far down the drain and unreachable by hand.
  • Clean Drains Weekly: A weekly drain clean can go a long way! Rinse and clean your drains weekly with vinegar and hot water.
